Digging for development of the subway in Los Angeles has unearthed an amazing new fossil site. Its very close to other great fossil localities so is perhaps not that surprising. There's probably a lot more where this came from, and maybe hiding under other urban areas as well.
A while ago these fossils probably would have been ignored and digging would have continued as normal. Fortunately there are now strong systems in place in many countries so that developers, researchers and museums work together to excavate palaeontological and archaeological finds.
"Here on the Miracle Mile is where the best record of life from the last great ice age in the world is found," said paleontologist Kim Scott
